FIBA Introduces Team Tabiat for Basketball Champions League Asia 2025

Tabiat, one of Iran's newer basketball clubs, is gearing up for a significant challenge as they prepare to compete in the prestigious Basketball Champions League Asia (BCL Asia) 2025. This marks a major step for the young organization, pitting them against the continent's elite teams.
The Iranian club secured their coveted spot in BCL Asia by impressively reaching the championship game of the FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL) Final 8 2025. Although coach Mehran Shahintab and his team ultimately finished as runners-up to the formidable two-time champions Al Riyadi, their journey was a testament to their rapid rise. Tabiat, originally known in the food industry, ventured into professional sports a few years ago, making a decisive entry into Iran's domestic basketball league in 2023. Remarkably, they clinched the national title in their inaugural season, a victory that served as their ticket to the WASL-West Asia league. There, they continued to make waves, again finishing second behind Al Riyadi, who achieved a 'three-peat' by sweeping the competition.
These silver-medal campaigns are notable achievements, not only for a relatively new club like Tabiat but also within the context of Iran's esteemed basketball history. Iran has long been recognized as a powerhouse in Asian basketball, both at the national team level and in club competitions, particularly in the tournament formerly known as the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. Prior to Tabiat, Iran has been represented by 10 different teams across 21 editions of the tournament, with Shahrday Gorgan being the most recent participant in the BCL Asia 2024. Iranian clubs have amassed a total of 10 medals in this competition, including an impressive six gold medals, a record they share with Lebanon. This sets the stage for the upcoming BCL Asia 2025 to potentially serve as a tiebreaker between these two dominant nations.
While breaking the gold medal deadlock might be a lofty goal, Tabiat is certainly not attending the BCL Asia, scheduled from June 7-13, merely to participate. Their primary objective is to succeed, and they will rely on several key players to lead their charge. Sina Vahedi, a star guard, returns to BCL Asia with a sense of unfinished business. He was part of the Shahrday Gorgan team that narrowly missed a medal in the previous edition, falling to the Hiroshima Dragons in the Third-Place Game. Vahedi demonstrated his hunger for a podium finish during the last WASL season, averaging 22.3 points and 5.8 assists per game in the Final 8 in Lebanon.
Another crucial player for Tabiat, both in stature and impact, is Ivan Buva. The experienced center was one of the standout performers in the WASL-West Asia League, boasting averages of 20.9 points and 10.5 rebounds. The team's strength is further bolstered by other important contributors such as fan favorite Perry Petty, the versatile Stedmon Lemon, as well as talented local players like elite rebounder Arman Zangeneh and Amir Gholizadeh, who are all expected to play significant roles in Tabiat's campaign.
