The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, has handed over the Gashua Regional Water Supply Project to the Yobe State Government. It is designed to deliver 3,200 million litres of potable water per day (MLD).

Facilitated by a former Senate president, Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, the N5.7 billion project is expected to serve residents of Gashua town in Bade LGA and surrounding communities.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Professor Utsev said the project reflects the federal government’s commitment to addressing water supply challenges in underserved communities across the country.

The minister revealed that the water scheme was completed to high standards at a revised cost of N5,735,046,146.75, with a design capacity to provide 3,200 million litres per day of potable water—sufficient to serve over one million residents of Gashua and surrounding areas.

He also confirmed that the treated water has undergone laboratory testing and meets both national and international standards for drinking water.

Senator Ahmed Lawan, who represents Yobe North, said the project was initiated in 2021 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari to address the community’s long-standing lack of potable water and its alarming rate of kidney-related illnesses.
