So, I am definitely using the premiere of as an excuse to share a streaming guide where kids die. These movies raise the stakes and let you know everyone is in danger by taking the safety wheels off for their child characters. Check out my five picks for this weekend below.
Where You Can Watch: Fandango at Home, Plex, Pluto TV, Prime Video, and Tubi
A group of junior high kids is outfitted with explosive collars and ordered to fight to the death by a totalitarian Japanese government. This screen adaptation of Koushun Takami’s dystopian horror book of the same name wastes no time letting you know the kids aren’t alright. is the reason most of us were unimpressed with . This action thriller’s thesis is “fuck those kids,” a sentiment repeatedly circled in blood. The sequel, , was never going to match the original’s energy. However, if you are a completionist, you can find it streaming on Fandango at Home, Plex, and Tubi. If you’re tired of seeing kids coddled in genre films, this should be on your watchlist this weekend.
Where You Can Watch: AMC+, Shudder, and Tubi
A couple who just had a baby is experiencing a rough patch in their relationship. They make the decision to buy a coffee table, which makes things so much worse. is by far the bleakest comedy we have seen in years. So, obviously, I made it my personality last year and forced all my friends to watch it. Most of them have healed now, but they will never forget. This film hinges on “fuck those kids” energy to sustain its delightfully macabre tone. If you haven’t seen this movie, hit play immediately before anything can be ruined for you. If you’ve seen it, then you know it goes where few movies on this streaming guide dare to go.
Where You Can Watch: VOD
After surviving the events of, Dan Torrance is a broken adult who must protect a kid with similar powers from a supernatural cult. A cult that feeds on children with powers to maintain their immortality. There is so much happening in . It is a long-awaited sequel to a movie many people love; Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) is a cool villain; and the cinematography is stunning. However, my favorite part is Bradley Trevor’s (Jacob Tremblay) death scene because it proves that nobody is safe in this movie. The uncomfortably long death, where Rose and the gang feast on him, haunts the audience. Many people look to Mike Flanagan for horror with feelings, but I want more of this sinister shit. This kid’s death set a tone and showed us what true terror is.
Where You Can Watch: AMC+ and Shudder
Rawhead is resurrected from his long slumber near an Irish village. Upon awakening, this creature goes on a violent rampage. This is no one’s favorite Clive Barker film and is far from the best title on this streaming guide. However, it is fun watching this leather-clad monster terrorize people in Ireland. Especially because Rawhead makes time to open a car and eat a kid like a sardine. This child’s death made me giggle, but also alerted us that Rawhead Rex would not spare the youth. Jurassic Park could never! This cheap icon’s claws (and teeth) are rated E for everybody and we must stan. I do not think it is the best kill of the movie, but it is the most shocking. Plus, it makes a huge impression amid the film’s never-ending chaos.
Where You Can Watch: AMC+, Hulu, and Shudder
Two brothers try to dispose of a man with a demon infection about to give birth to evil. However, they only make things worse, and their village suffers for it. Demián Rugna’s film is mean, shocking, and one of the best reasons to be a Shudder subscriber. This film said, “fuck those kids,” multiple times and very loudly. Do I highlight the little girl whose pet turned on her? Or do I point you toward the dead woman eating her son’s brains out of his open head like popcorn? No child character was safe, and that is why When Evil Lurks hits so damn hard. Once they remove the safety rails, it becomes a sinister free-for-all. That is why it is pure cinema. Evil is literally coming for everyone in this film. That reminds me to recommend Rugna’s movie Terrified, also on Shudder.
Bring Her Back is now in theaters.
There are plenty of genre movies that understand that everyone on screen should be fair game. However, these five are some of the loudest about the subject. If you also live for “fuck those kids” horror movies, find me on Bluesky.
