Enugu Govt Terminates Contract Over Substandard School Project, Withholds Contractor's Name | Sahara Reporters
The substandard work at the site has sparked outrage among Enugu State residents, especially given the uniform budget allocated for the projects and the secrecy surrounding the companies executing them.
A recent video showing structural defects, including cracked walls, at the site of one of the ongoing Smart Green School projects has forced the Enugu State Government to terminate a contract with a construction company.
The substandard work at the site has sparked outrage among Enugu State residents, especially given the uniform budget allocated for the projects and the secrecy surrounding the companies executing them.
Meanwhile, the government, in a statement on Sunday, signed by Secretary to the State Government Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, stated that the defects had already been identified through internal monitoring systems before the video surfaced on social media.
"The state government promptly terminated the contract and disengaged the contractor responsible for the substandard execution," he said, but failed to name the contractor who may be working on the other sites.
According to the statement, the government has scheduled the affected site for full remediation to meet the high structural and safety standards of the Governor Peter Mbah administration.
Prof. Onyia emphasised that the safety of children, teachers, workers, and host communities remains the government's highest priority.
To prevent similar incidents, the government has established a three-tiered quality control and monitoring mechanism.
This includes local government engineers, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, and the Governor's Delivery Unit, which provides independent verification of project milestones.
He said that the government remains committed to delivering world-class educational infrastructure that will serve the state's children and communities for generations to come.
"We will not relent until every Smart School stands as a symbol of excellence, innovation, and integrity," Prof. Onyia declared.
The incident highlights the importance of quality control and monitoring in construction projects.
