Don Jazzy's Heartbreaking Confession: The Untold Story of His Near Music Exit

Nigerian music executive and producer Don Jazzy recently revealed that the dissolution of his legendary record label, Mo’Hits, in 2012, brought him to the brink of abandoning his illustrious music career entirely. Co-founded with artist D’banj, Mo’Hits met an abrupt end due to widely publicized disagreements, a period Don Jazzy confessed in an interview with Rolling Stone, left him considering moving abroad and quitting music for good. He recounted, “When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad.”
However, this moment of profound crisis served as an unexpected turning point in his professional life. Don Jazzy credits the unwavering encouragement of his friends for convincing him to persevere and rebuild from the ground up. This pivotal decision led directly to the establishment of Mavin Records, which would soon become a new powerhouse within the African music landscape. Reflecting on the challenging experience, Don Jazzy stated, “Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” a testament to his enduring resilience.
Rising from the ashes of Mo’Hits, Mavin Records initially provided a new home for several of its former artists, including Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince. The label's roster was quickly bolstered by the significant signing of superstar Tiwa Savage, solidifying its early foundation. Over a decade since its inception, Mavin Records has not only thrived but has also successfully cultivated a new generation of global music phenoms. Its current roster boasts internationally recognized talents such as Rema and Ayra Starr, alongside other acclaimed artists like Ladipoe and Johnny Drille.
The monumental success and far-reaching influence of Mavin Records received further significant validation in 2024. Universal Music Group announced a majority investment in Mavin Global, a landmark move that underscores the global recognition of the label's achievements. This investment serves as a powerful affirmation of Don Jazzy’s courageous decision to remain in Nigeria and construct an empire that has since profoundly shaped and defined the sound of an entire continent.
