Did the UNC Men's Basketball program swing and miss this offseason?

Published 4 days ago2 minute read

Do you believe that the UNC men's basketball program swung and missed during this offseason? Or do you think that head coach Hubert Davis and Jim Tanner, the first ever general manager in program history, did well in revamping the roster? A roster that had plenty of departures due to exhausting eligibility and the transfer portal.

Well, The Field of 68's Rob Dauster lists North Carolina as one of the top three teams to miss:

Davis and Tanner added Caleb Wilson, Isaiah Dennis, and Derek Dixon from high school, plus Jonathan Powell, Henri Veesaar, Kyan Evans, Jarin Stevenson, and Jaydon Young through the transfer portal, including Luka Bogavac, an international recruit.

Perhaps UNC did not secure the top names it was hoping for, but the overall roster composition appears to mesh well on paper. For one, Davis does not have to worry about who the starting center will be with the addition of Veesaar, a mobile seven-footer who is a lob threat and shoots from beyond the arc — there is no reason for Carolina to try different starting centers like it did last season.

For what it's worth, transfer portal class listings do not hold much weight, and more importantly for fans — results on the court are the only thing that should matter. So, even if UNC was listed towards the bottom of Dauster's list, there's still a lot left to be done.

After a season where North Carolina fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Davis is building a roster that can take the program back to the top. As he is entering his fifth season, many believe that this is make-or-break — the results determine whether or not Davis will have his job next year.

Davis has made the an NCAA championship appearance, failed to make the tournament, reached the Sweet 16, and recently fell in the Round of 64 after defeating San Diego State in its First Four matchup.

Is this make or break? Or do you think that Davis still has a couple years?

His incoming transfer portal class helps his case in keeping the job as UNC's men's basketball coach.
