Whenever someone says Canadian tuxedo, my mind goes to one place: The 2001 American Music Awards where Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake arrived in head-to-toe denim—looks that were, to put it bluntly, received poorly. After all this time, I still wouldn’t put them on a best dressed list, but I’ve definitely warmed up to an all-denim outfit, and it seems everyone else has, too.
On TikTok, searches for Canadian tuxedos have spiked, with the term denim-on-denim fashion up 108 percent this past week. But this isn’t just something that’s happening on the internet: The spring trend has started to infiltrate the celebrity world, too. It started with Julianne Moore and Katie Holmes, whose unexpected takes on the trend—barrel jeans and denim vests—convinced many that all-denim can actually be pretty chic. Bella Hadid, Rihanna, and Kaia Gerber (a.k.a. the girls on everyone’s style inspo board) have since all been spotted in the matchy-matchy trend, too, confirming that the look is going to be major for spring.

If you’re a double-denim virgin, I recommend grabbing items in the same shade. You of course can experiment, but if you’re sticking to the same blue, you don’t have to worry whether or not it’s working (it is). Below, I put together some matching outfits in case you want to start from scratch, though you can always just grab a matching top to go with the jeans already in your closet. Below, shop Canadian tuxedos from Levi’s, Madewell, Aritzia, and more.
Madewell
Madewell’s Cocoon-Sleeve Denim Lady Jacket and matching wide-leg jeans might be the classiest version of a Canadian tuxedo I’ve ever seen. When it comes to denim, the dressiest color is undoubtedly that dark, inky blue, which is further elevated by the jacket’s elegant design. The collarless style has a high, round neck, big silver buttons, roomy but not oversized fit, and beautiful contrast stitching.
Aritzia
This combo from Aritzia is so classically cool. The loose jeans and relaxed button-down feel both vintage and fresh; I could see both a supermodel wearing this in the ‘90s and Jenna Lyons rocking it today. In terms of styling, you have a few ways to wear this: Because of the roomy fit, you could treat the top as a light jacket, layering it over your favorite white tee. But my preferred way of wearing these two is with a belt and pointed-toe pumps; it dresses up the look, mellows-out the bagginess, and breaks up the color a bit.
Nordstrom
The easiest way to tackle this trend is with a jumpsuit; it gives the illusion of double-denim but only requires one item. For late winter and early spring, I really like this long-sleeve one from Pistola (this sleeveless one from Reformation is my late spring pick). The style cinches at the waist before expanding into a wide leg, a silhouette I find super flattering. Plus, shoppers say the stretchy denim is “so comfy.”
Denim-on-denim is gearing up to be one of spring’s hottest trends, which is why I’m shopping the matchy-matchy style now. Below, find more sets as well as some individual jackets that you rock with the jeans already in your wardrobe.
