Danielle Collins Defeats Iga Swiatek at Italian Open

American Danielle Collins defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets in the third round of the Italian Open. Collins took advantage of Swiatek's poor serving, winning the first set and battling back from a break down in the second to win 6-1, 7-5. This victory marks Collins' second win in nine matches against Swiatek and her first on clay, Swiatek's preferred surface. Collins will face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the fourth round, while Swiatek will prepare for the French Open, which starts on May 25.
Swiatek had won the Italian Open in three of the past four seasons but struggled in the lead-up to this year's event in Rome. She hasn't won a WTA tournament since claiming her fourth French Open title at Roland Garros 12 months ago. In the match against Collins, Swiatek served double faults on break points in her first two service games and lost her third to love as Collins took a 5-0 lead. Swiatek won the sixth game but was broken for a fourth time, losing the first set in 24 minutes. She broke Collins in the first game of the second set but couldn't hold the break. Collins fought to keep the score level and then broke in the 12th game, sealing victory with her second match point.
Collins' next opponent, Elina Svitolina, defeated American Hailey Baptiste in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Italian number one Jasmine Paolini defeated Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last 16, where she will face Jelena Ostapenko. Australian Open champion Madison Keys lost to Peyton Stearns in three sets. Stearns will play Marie Bouzkova or Naomi Osaka next. Diana Shnaider beat Jaqueline Cristian and will face the winner of the match between Elise Mertens and Jessica Pegula.
Iga Swiatek's title defense ended as she was defeated by Danielle Collins 6-1, 7-5. Swiatek was aiming for her fourth title at the Foro Italico but failed to advance past the third round. Collins will now face Elina Svitolina or Hailey Baptiste in the last 16. Swiatek's loss is a shock, considering her strong record on clay. She was also defeated by Coco Gauff in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open earlier this month. Swiatek, usually dominant on clay, was broken four times in the first set and couldn't impose herself on Collins, against whom she had previously won eight of nine matches.
Men's world number one Jannik Sinner will return to action against Mariano Navone following a three-month doping ban.
