China seeks to equip the Pakistan Air Force with its new Shaanxi KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft
Through a brief social media statement, the government of Pakistan announced that China has offered to equip its Air Force with the new Shaanxi KJ-500 AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) aircraft—an upgrade that would mark a significant leap in Pakistan’s airborne surveillance and command capabilities. This development comes as the country also awaits the delivery of the new Chinese-origin stealth fighters J-35, which would further support the modernization of its combat fleet, currently composed of JF-17 Thunder and Chengdu J-10CE platforms.

It’s worth recalling that the KJ-500 is one of the most advanced AEW&C aircraft developed by the Asian giant, attributed to Xi’an Aircraft Industrial Corporation. Based on the Y-9 transport aircraft, the KJ-500 stands out for its cutting-edge phased-array radar system mounted on a distinctive dome, granting it 360-degree coverage and the ability to detect both aerial and ground targets. The aircraft is also equipped with electronic warfare systems and advanced data link capabilities, allowing its 10-member crew to continuously share critical battlefield intelligence with allied forces.
Recently, the aircraft made its first overseas deployment during the “Eagles of Civilization” exercise conducted between the Chinese and Egyptian Air Forces. This major event also involved the deployment of YY-20A transport aircraft and J-10 fighters—alongside Egypt’s MiG-29s—and further deepened military ties between the two nations, at a time when China is seeking to expand its geopolitical influence across Africa.

Additionally, it is important to highlight that the China–Pakistan military partnership extends beyond aircraft procurement for Pakistan’s Air Force. A recent example is Pakistan’s acquisition of the HQ-19 ballistic missile defense systems, capable of intercepting missiles during their terminal flight phase—an upgrade over the previously fielded HQ-9B and HQ-16FE systems that form the backbone of the country’s air defense network, largely aimed at countering capabilities from neighboring India. Cooperation is also strong in the naval domain, with China supplying Hangor-class submarines and Tughril-class frigates to Pakistan.
