Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), known as Chairman Wontumi, arrived at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025. He was dressed in all-white attire and appeared to be in high spirits. He was accompanied by Godfred Yeboah Dame, the former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, to honor an invitation from the state security agency.

A video shared by Wontumi Media's Kwaku Dawuro showed Chairman Wontumi being greeted by supporters, including the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the NPP, Paul Yandoh. He was escorted to the entrance and blew a kiss to his sympathisers before entering the building. His appearance at the CID headquarters followed a raid at his residence on Friday, May 23, 2025, by security operatives.

In an interview with Wontumi Radio on May 23, 2025, Chairman Wontumi stated that the security officials who raided his house were from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and were there to arrest him. He mentioned that the Ghana Police Service had already invited him to their office and that he would resist any attempt by the NIB to arrest him. He recounted informing a police officer about his scheduled appearance on Monday, May 26, 2025, and providing a written confirmation. Despite this, he found numerous people outside his house claiming the BNI boss in Kumasi had sent them to apprehend him.

Chairman Wontumi refused to go with them and contacted the police, who confirmed they had not dispatched anyone to pick him up and were awaiting his arrival on Monday. The reason for the security officials' presence at his home is unclear. However, the government recently suspended the mining license of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region. Chairman Wontumi has denied these accusations, suggesting that he is being targeted due to his aspiration to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.
