Alexandro Bernabei was signed from from Argentine side Lanus in 2022 for £3.75m and was expected to potentially dislodge Greg Taylor from the left-back slot.

But he struggled in the Hoops and only made 28 appearances in just under two full seasons at the club and was sent on loan to Internacional in Brazil.

That was in March last year and since then, his performances have been, by all accounts, nothing short of sensational.

Perhaps being back in South America has helped the former Argentina youth international, as he was named in the team of the year by the Brazilian FA.

The 24-year-old has established himself as the best left-back in Brazil's Serie A and has been tipped for a call-up to the full Argentina squad.

Internacional have been keen to make his move a permanent one for some time now and after selling one of their youngsters to Al Qadisiyah in Saudi Arabia for £16m, they've reinvested some of that money in Bernabei.

The move was confirmed by Inter tonight after weeks of speculation, amid links to fellow Brazilian club Palmeiras and reports of Celtic holding out for a £7m fee.

It's been reported the two clubs have agreed a fee of around £5m, with Celtic standing to make a tidy little profit of circa £1.25m.

A statement from Internacional said: "Sport Club Internacional announces that it has concluded negotiations with Celtic Football Club for the permanent signing of left-back Alexandro Bernabei. The athlete, who stood out in the 2024 season, has signed a contract valid until December 2028.

"Bernabei arrived at Internacional in March 2024, on loan, and became a key player in the team, contributing to the team's recovery in the second half of the year. In the Brazilian Championship, he played 23 matches, scored 3 goals and provided 6 assists, a performance that earned him the award for best left-back in the competition.

"With Bernabei staying, Internacional reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a solid base in the squad, betting on the continuity of key players and reinforcing the group specifically for the 2025 season.

"The Club's strategy is to ensure a competitive team, which can achieve great results and provide much joy to the Colorado fans this season."

Bernabei himself said: "I am very happy here, and so is my family. I want to continue giving my best to help Inter achieve great results.

"I know how big and important it is to wear this shirt.

"Now, I have to continue seeking the best achievements together with my teammates and our fans."
