CBI Files Chargesheet Against Former Governor in Kiru Hydropower Corruption Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik and five others in connection with the Kiru hydropower corruption case. The CBI's action follows a probe into alleged corruption involving the awarding of civil contracts worth Rs 2,200 crore for the Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project. This investigation began after a request from the Jammu and Kashmir government in 2022, seeking an inquiry into irregularities in awarding two major contracts.

Satya Pal Malik, who served as the governor of J&K from August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019, initially raised concerns about these contracts. He publicly claimed he was offered a Rs 300 crore bribe to approve two files, one of which was related to the Kiru project. Following a CBI search at his residence, Malik denied all corruption allegations, asserting that the agency was targeting him instead of investigating those he had accused.

The CBI has booked Navin Kumar Choudhary, the former chairman of Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Limited (CVPPPL), along with officials M S Babu, M K Mittal, and Arun Kumar Mishra, and Patel Engineering Limited. The FIR alleges that a re-tender decision made during the 47th board meeting was not properly implemented, leading to an improper contract award.
