CATL Launches Second-Generation Fast-Charging Battery
Chinese EV battery maker CATL has launched its second-generation Shenxing battery, intensifying the race to create EVs that charge as quickly as refueling gas vehicles. The company unveiled the new battery at its 'Tech Day' event, claiming it can add over 520 km (323 miles) of range in just five minutes of charging. This development positions CATL to potentially lead the global effort to produce EV batteries with ultra-fast charging capabilities.
Rival BYD has also introduced a 5-minute charging system, contributing to the intensifying competition among Chinese companies, including Tesla, for EV market dominance. Automakers worldwide are relying on ultra-fast charging to encourage EV adoption, addressing concerns about lengthy charging times and range anxiety that deter potential buyers.
CATL's updated Shenxing battery can charge from 5% to 80% in 15 minutes at temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit). Additionally, CATL teased a sodium-ion battery cell called Naxtra, noted for its increased stability compared to traditional lithium-based batteries, and dual-power batteries capable of providing EVs with up to 1,000km of range. The company also launched a sodium battery product with an energy density of 175 watt-hours per kilogram.
At an event in Shanghai, CATL chief technology officer Gao Huan stated that the new generation of Shenxing can enable a driving range of 520 kilometers with a five-minute charge and the battery can reach 80% charging from 0% in 15 minutes. CATL's founder, Robin Zeng, aims to transform the company into a green-energy provider and reduce the cost of EV development. The company reported a 15% growth in 2024 net profit, its slowest in six years, due to a price war in China's EV market.
CATL said the second generation of its "Shenxing" fast-charging battery would power more than 67 new electric vehicle models this year.
