Cardinals reportedly shopping $15 million veteran starter - Yahoo Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals ended the first half of 2025 on a high-note, defeating the Atlanta Braves and improving to 51-46 on the year.

The team has vastly outperformed its expectations. They'll certainly have some tough decisions to make in the coming weeks leading up to the trade deadline.

They have yet to pick a direction as of now. They could buy, sell, or potentially stand pat.

St. Louis has plenty of potential trade chips. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, they are shopping a veteran starting pitcher.

"St. Louis has several impact relievers on expiring deals (Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton and Steven Matz) and is believed to be shopping starting pitcher Erick Fedde as well," Woo reported.

Fedde is having a difficult season. After a career year in which he posted a 3.30 ERA with the Cardinals and Chicago White Sox, the 32-year-old right-hander is 3-9 with a 4.83 ERA in 19 starts.

The right-hander's value has certainly gone down, and he has struggled since the end of June. Chances of the Cardinals bringing back a solid haul for him are slim-to-none.

St. Louis would be better off shopping arms such as Helsley, Maton and Matz, as they could bring back better hauls to set them up for 2026 and beyond.

The Cardinals will certainly be an interesting team as the deadline approaches. If they sell, Fedde will almost certainly be a part of it.

Still, it's unlikely he will bring back much in return.
