By-election: Igbinedion, others to emerge party candidates

A daughter of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Barr. Omosede Igbinedion, has been tipped to emerge as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Barr. Igbinedion was picked as consensus candidate of the party and was endorsed by the State Working Committee of the Edo APC.
The APC and other political parties have picked today to conduct party primary for vacant seats in Edo Central senatorial district and Ovia Federal Constituency.
For the Edo Central seat, the APC picked Hon Joseph Ikpea as its preferred candidate.
Despite the choice of consensus candidates, Hon Oscar Aghedo bought nomination form to contest against Igbinedion while Glory Momodu bought form to contest against Ikpea.
The Peoples Democratic Party, on Thursday, conducted ward congresses to elect ad-hoc delegates ahead of the party primaries.
Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, said a total of 222 adhoc delegates were elected from the wards, including 153 from Edo Central Senatorial District and 69 from Ovia Federal Constituency.
He said the congresses were a reflection of the unity and strength of the party.
A total of four aspirants, John Yakubu, Friday Itulah, Joseph Okojie, and Festus Edogun, bought the nomination forms of the PDP for the senatorial seat while one aspirant, Johnny Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi, bought the nomination form for the Ovia House of Representatives seat.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party has disqualified Festus Edogun from contesting in the party primary for the Edo Central Senatorial seat.
It shifted the conduct of its primary to Monday, July 21st, 2025.
The PDP five-man panel appointed by the PDP National Working Committee and chaired by Prof. Okumoko Tubo Pearce cleared John Yakubu, Friday Itulah, and Joe Okojie to contest in the primary.
For the Ovia Federal Constituency seat, only one aspirant, Johnny Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi, was screened and cleared as the party’s sole candidate.
The PDP also constituted LGA Congresses Appeal Panels to address grievances arising from the conduct of Local Government Congresses held to elect national delegates.
National Organizing Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Umar M. Bature, in two separate letters dated Thursday, July 17, 2025, announced the composition of the appeal panels for both the Edo Central Senatorial District and the Ovia North East/Ovia South West Federal Constituency.
The panel members, consistent across both assignments, include: Hon. Hilary Ukwute, as Chairman, Bakumo Victor Ebimami, as member, and Onome Joy Whonana, as secretary.
At a stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress held last night in Benin City, Edo Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, said the party opted for consensus arrangement to produce Barr. Omosede Igbinedion and Hon Joseph Ikpea as the party’s candidate for Ovia Constituency and Edo Central respectively.
According to him, “We had about five aspirants. We met all of them and we have resolved to have one aspirant in Ovia Federal constituency.
“We are going to do affirmation and there will be no primary. We have resolved that Omosede Igbinedion is our only candidate in Ovia Federal.
State Chairman of the Edo APC, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, said the party would secure victory at the polls.
He said the Edo PDP has been depleted.
