Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), has commended President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, marking his second anniversary in office.

Speaking at the Timelineng lecture in Lagos, Buratai commended the administration’s thematic approach to addressing economic challenges.

However, Buratai urged state governors to take more responsibility for securing their domains, citing the constitution’s provision for state governments to maintain peace and order.

He emphasised the importance of cooperation between state and federal governments on security matters.

On media reportage and security, Buratai stressed the need for a smooth working relationship to avoid jeopardizing national security and sovereignty.

He noted that a robust media landscape is essential for democracy, empowering individuals with knowledge while holding power accountable.

Buratai noted the media’s critical role in promoting peace and democratic governance, adding that responsible journalism fosters political stability and national security.

He also drew from his experience as former Chief of Army Staff, where he maintained a robust relationship with the media, embedding journalists during operational tours and holding regular press briefings.

The former military leader encouraged state governors to review their security strategies and invest in technology, human resource development, education, empowerment, and road infrastructure to enhance security.

“There is no amount of funds spent saving a life that is wasted,” he said, emphasising the importance of prioritising security.
