The duo allegedly demanded bribes from unsuspecting victims, promising to terminate corruption investigations in return for hefty payments.
The suspects, identified as 23-year-old Tobias Singila Wekesa and 26-year-old Sharon Nanjala Anyango, were arrested at an NG-CDF office in Bungoma County.
Wekesa, a third-year student at Kibabii University, had been masquerading as the Director of EACC Kakamega County, a non-existent position.
His alleged accomplice, Anyango, claimed to be a senior director based at EACC Nairobi and graduated from the same university in 2024.
According to the EACC, the duo had posed as investigators from the Integrity Centre probing local development projects.
They allegedly demanded a bribe of KSh 150,000, threatening sanctions if their demands were not met.
In a statement signed by EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Ahmed Mohamud, the EACC spokesperson highlighted the alarming audacity of the youthful suspects.
"The two were arrested at an NG-CDF office, where they were falsely investigating projects and demanding a bribe of KES 150,000 to "drop" the investigation. Following a tip-off from complainants, EACC mounted an operation that led to their arrest," EACC stated.
The suspects are currently detained at Bungoma Central Police Station, with further investigations underway.
The EACC complained about the acute rise in impersonation cases targeting public officials and citizens.
The commission has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report such imposters immediately.
"To counter such fraudulent activities, the Commission advises the public to: remain vigilant and cautious of anyone claiming to be an EACC official and report suspected imposters to the Commission through Toll-Free No. 1551 or via email at [email protected]," EACC added.
The commission further appealed to Kenyans who might have been victims of the duo to step forward.
"Additionally, any person defrauded by the arrested suspects is encouraged to contact the Commission or visit EACC offices at Integrity Centre in Nairobi or the nearest regional office," concluded the statement.
A police officer was arrested at the Globe Roundabout in Nairobi while allegedly soliciting a KSh 15,000 bribe from a motorist.
The officer, the deputy OCS of Mavindini Police Station in Makueni, was reportedly on leave but had deployed himself to monitor traffic along the road.
According to a police report, the officer assaulted the duty officer who attempted to arrest him, causing injuries to the officer's face and chest.
