BRICS Leaders Advocate Responsible AI Use & Data Protections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged BRICS nations to collectively pursue the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), underscoring the critical need to balance technological innovation with robust governance frameworks. Speaking at the Outreach Session on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence during the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6, 2025, PM Modi highlighted the importance of an inclusive and ethically guided AI framework within the grouping.

According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi, PM Modi emphasized that BRICS must ensure that AI governance prioritizes both advancements and safeguards. The Prime Minister articulated India's philosophy, stating, "We in India believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities," further explaining that India's approach is guided by the mantra of 'AI for All' and is actively being applied across numerous sectors.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who also participated in the session, asserted that AI must not become "a club of the few." Guterres stressed that AI benefits must extend to all, particularly developing countries, which require a significant voice in global AI governance. He warned that effective and equitable AI governance cannot be achieved without addressing systemic imbalances within the global order, pointing specifically to institutions like the UN Security Council. Guterres called for reforms in global governance mechanisms, advocating for multilateral frameworks to be restructured to reflect modern-day multipolar realities.

During the session, PM Modi reiterated India's conviction in a multipolar world and the pivotal role BRICS can play in shaping it. Secretary Ravi detailed PM Modi's suggestions, which included the establishment of a science and research repository within the BRICS group by Global South countries. This initiative would focus on securing and strengthening the resilience of critical mineral supply chains. Additionally, PM Modi proposed that the BRICS group collaborate on responsible AI practices.

Looking ahead, India is set to assume the chairmanship of BRICS in 2026 and will host the 'AI Impact Summit'. Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to all BRICS nations to participate in this upcoming summit, reinforcing the collective commitment to guiding AI development responsibly on a global scale.
