Brian Windhorst tells Luka Doncic to do arguably 'the most important thing' in the entire NBA after LA Lakers takeover
Although the Los Angeles Lakers were the third seed in the 2024-25 season, they were sent home in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs.
Evidently, the Lakers have to improve over the offseason to bolster their roster in hopes of winning another NBA Championship.
Luka Doncic will likely play a huge role in that, but before that, the former Dallas Mavericks superstar has a big decision to make.

Playing for the iconic Purple and Gold franchise is an unmatched experience for any NBA superstar, which likely includes Doncic.
However, let’s not forget his connection with the Mavericks, albeit getting backstabbed by the top brass. Even though Doncic has done nothing but prove his loyalty to the Lakers since getting traded, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst wants the 26-year-old to do one more thing.
“So, I’m a big actions over words guy, especially in the NBA, and this is where Luka can absolutely do that.
“So, I would argue one of the most important things that is on the table for the entire NBA this summer is whether Luka signs a contract extension with the Lakers, which he can do on or after August 2,” Windhorst said on Get Up.
With Mark Walter purchasing the Lakers, finances aren’t expected to be a problem for the team. Despite knowing that, Windhorst wants Doncic to show his commitment to the Lakers right now.
“He can sign for four years and up to 230 million. He has some reasons why he may not want to sign for four. He could potentially sign for three. But the Lakers need to get him into that contract,” he added.
When the Mavericks traded Doncic to the Lakers, it cost him a huge amount of money. There’s no doubt that Doncic hasn’t been himself since the move.
But Windhorst wants Luka to realize that playing for the Lakers is the best spot imaginable for him at this point in his career.
“Look, I thought the Lakers were a great spot for him, even before this ownership change,” Windhorst continued. “Now, I would tell him that with his new potential investment, ‘You couldn’t be in a better basketball situation in the world than with the Lakers.'”
“Having said that, until he gets into that contract, there will still be a little uncertainty,” he concluded.
Well, as Windy stated, there will always be a cloud of doubt over what Doncic wants to do until he signs on the dotted line.
But for now, the positive aspect is that Doncic is elated with Walter’s arrival. On top of that, even in the worst-case scenario, Doncic is still under contract until the end of the 2025-26 season, if he doesn’t opt into his final year’s player option.
