Meranda also revealed that her security details have not been fully restored after they were withdrawn earlier in the week.

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has responded to the invasion of the Assembly complex by ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Meranda also revealed that her security details have not been fully restored after they were withdrawn earlier in the week.

Speaking at the Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Friday after a hearing on Obasa’s application challenging his removal as Speaker by at least 36 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, Meranda noted that the legal battle had just begun.

“This is actually just the beginning, and I think we should allow the legal team to do their work,” she said.

When questioned about Obasa’s invasion of the Assembly on Thursday with a convoy of police officers and other security personnel, where he conducted a session with four lawmakers, Meranda acknowledged his right to access the Assembly as a sitting member but criticised his forceful entry into her office.

“I think he is still a member of the House of Assembly, so he has every right to come to the Assembly. But invading the complex and breaking into my office—that is unacceptable,” she stated.

She, however, expressed confidence in the support of her colleagues.

“I have my people with me, and I have God with me. I have about three or four policemen, whereas my normal convoy includes 12 policemen, four DSS officers, and two anti-bomb specialists. But as of this morning, I do not have that,” she revealed.

Meranda described Obasa’s session with four lawmakers as a “show of shame,” emphasising that the Assembly requires a quorum to hold a valid sitting.

“To me, that was just a show of shame. In our job, we have numbers that form a quorum. So if you are sitting with only four members, you are just performing theatre,” she remarked.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, forcefully entered the Assembly complex on Thursday, raising security concerns after the withdrawal of Speaker Meranda’s official security aides.

Videos obtained by SaharaReporters showed Obasa arriving with security personnel, including police officers. Obasa, who was impeached while on a trip to the United States, broke into the chamber to gain access.

He then presided over a controversial plenary session attended by only four lawmakers. Meanwhile, 36 lawmakers boycotted the session, gathering at the Assembly’s garden in a show of defiance.

“This is nothing but a desperate attempt to hijack the Assembly. We have voted for Meranda, and we are standing by that decision,” one lawmaker stated. The Assembly is expected to communicate the date for its next sitting in due course.
