Brazilian Vice President Alckmin Arrives Nigeria For Strategic Dialogue To Deepen Bilateral Cooperation
Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, arrived in Abuja on Tuesday, 24 June 2025, to begin a three-day working visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Brazil through the Second Session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM).
Accompanied by his wife, Maria Lúcia Alckmin, the Vice President was received at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by top Nigerian officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.
The visit marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s South-South diplomatic engagement, with discussions expected to result in over thirty Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across strategic areas such as defence cooperation, agricultural technology transfer, energy collaboration, and cultural exchange programmes.
Speaking at the reception, Senator Hadejia described the visit as “a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” highlighting the importance of Brazil’s experience in agribusiness, energy transition, and industrial development in relation to Nigeria’s national priorities.
“This dialogue mechanism represents our commitment to leveraging South-South partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to our citizens,” he said.
The strategic dialogue, which runs through the week, is intended to strengthen cooperation frameworks and align both countries’ shared interests in inclusive development, sustainable growth, and technical collaboration.
The outcomes of the summit are expected to advance ongoing reforms in agriculture, energy, and trade, while building on existing bilateral ties between Nigeria and Brazil.
