Bindi Irwin on motherhood and raising her daughter, Grace Warrior

Published 1 week ago4 minute read

Since welcoming her daughter, Grace Warrior, almost four years ago, Bindi Irwin has been giving fans the ultimate front-row seat to her parenting journey – and we are here for it.

Through her down-to-earth social media posts and heartwarming family snaps, Bindi keeps it real about life with hubby Chandler Powell and their animal-loving little girl, all while continuing the family’s iconic conservation work at Australia Zoo.

One thing is clear: nature and play are at the heart of everything they do.

Bindi and Chandler welcomed Grace Warrior Irwin Powell into the world on March 25, 2021 – and life has been an adventure ever since.

Let’s take a closer look at Bindi Irwin’s parenting

For Bindi, caring for animals her whole life turned out to be the perfect training ground for parenthood.

“Newborns are like teeny, tiny animals that we get at our wildlife hospital,” she jokes. “They have to eat around the clock, they have absolutely no way of communicating other than crying and you have to figure out what the problem is. They need constant care and 100% of your energy, 100% of the time. Crocs are probably easier!”

Every mum has that one special trick up their sleeve – and for Bindi, it’s all about the power of a good cuddle.

“My biggest superpower as a parent are my hugs. Any time Grace is having a big emotion – sadness, frustration, even joy – she asks if she can have a cuddle. Sometimes our hugs are 10 or 15 minutes long. I don’t care what else is going on. I am never the first one to break a hug. She can let go when she’s ready.”

Bindi’s biggest tip? Make intentional time for your family — no distractions, no screens.

“My best advice is to dedicate time to being completely present with your family. It’s all too easy for life to get in the way of quality, intentional time with your child or children. Set down devices, and plan on time together doing what you love as a family. Those are the moments you will treasure forever.”

When you’re a family constantly on the move – whether it’s a 12-hour drive through the outback or a 17-hour flight to Africa – screens definitely have their place.

“We travel a lot with our conservation work and often the travel days are absolutely enormous. For us, trying to take a 12 hour drive to outback Australia or a 17 hour flight from Australia to Africa with a two year old is made achievable by using some technology. We find super fun nature based apps because animals are Grace’s favourite. And of course, we have every episode of Bluey downloaded!”

Just because Grace is Steve Irwin’s granddaughter doesn’t mean she’ll be wrestling crocs anytime soon.

“When she is 18, and if she wants to help us feed the crocodiles, that’s great – but not now and not anytime soon. I understand how wildlife behaves and I don’t ever want to have Grace in a situation or meeting an animal that she’s not ready for. Her world pretty much revolves around koalas, tortoises, giraffes and red pandas – which I know she’s totally good with.”

Even if you’re a city dweller, Bindi says there’s always a way to connect with nature.

“We are constantly seeking out nature based activities for our daughter. When we are visiting cities we look for any kind of park or nature refuge to visit. You don’t always need toys or entertainment, just running around outdoors looking for animals, sticks, rocks, leaves is everything – it’s such a simple and wonderful way to reconnect with the natural world. Watching Grace play has been one of the biggest joys of motherhood. It’s like watching her curiosity and confidence grow in real-time. Play really is magic.”

Bindi and Chandler have been open about their journey with infertility and endometriosis – and how much of a miracle Grace truly is.

“I really appreciate everybody who’s curious to see if we will have another child, but I do just want to send it out there that remember to be careful when you ask this question because you never know what’s happening in someone’s life. In a family’s world, everything may seem fine on the outside, and on the inside, their own personal journey might have been filled with turmoil and challenges that you can’t even fathom. We feel very lucky to have Grace. She is our beautiful girl, but she will probably be our one child.”
