Billy Joel health update: Howard Stern shares insights - Newsday
Billy Joel is "doing fine," according to fellow Long Islander Howard Stern, who says he recently had dinner with the singer.
"Yeah, he does have issues," the talk-show host recounted on Tuesday's episode of "The Howard Stern Show" on SiriusXM, "but he said, ‘Yeah, you can tell people, you know, I'm not dying.’"
Joel, who celebrated his 76th birthday May 9, has been in the headlines lately due to his health. In February, the singer fell on stage during a concert at the Mohegan Sun resort in Connecticut. In March, he postponed a string of dates to recover from an unspecified surgery. And on May 23, Joel canceled all upcoming concerts and announced his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, a buildup of excess fluid in the ventricles of the brain. The condition can affect vision, balance and memory function.
Joel has been out of public sight since his announcement. The singer was not scheduled to attend the Tribeca Festival premiere of “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” a new documentary on his life and career, Wednesday night at the Beacon Theatre. He will also be a no-show when the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame inducts his early band The Hassles on June 28, though original members Jon Small and Richard McKenna are expected to attend.
Stern, who grew up in Roosevelt and Rockville Centre, sounded upbeat about the Hicksville-raised singer's condition. "He’s doing fine," Stern told his longtime co-host Robin Quivers. "He just, he's gotta deal with some medical stuff, but he was delightful. We had a great time with the wives."
Stern, an amateur guitarist, said he brought out one of his instruments and sang "Happy Birthday to You" for Joel. Stern added, "He didn’t seem real impressed."
