Benue killings: Rhodes-Vivour berates Tinubu, seeks end to massacre
Lagos State governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has raised questions over what he described as President Bola Tinubu’s nonchalant stance towards incessant killing in Benue State.
Speaking on his X handle on Monday, Gbadebo wondered why drastic steps have not been taken to bring perpetrators to book, pointing out that a sitting President should not be pushing for dialogue and reconciliation when innocent lives are wasted in Benue State.
He warned that the ongoing killings in Benue State, which led to displacement of thousands and the destruction of ancestral farmlands, should not be treated with kid gloves
“Dialogue and Reconcile” are two of the most insensitive and irresponsible words ever used by a sitting president in the wake of a massacre by a notorious terrorist organization. But no one is surprised: he once asked in Ondo – Where are the cows,” he wrote.
No fewer than 200 persons, including five security personnel and internally displaced persons, IDPs, as well as children and women, were reportedly killed in a bloody attack by suspected terrorist herdsmen on Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area, LGAs, of Benue state.
Miffed by the ongoing genocidal attacks and violent land grabbing in the state, which went on unabated for months, Gbadebo described President Tinubu’s actions in the last 24 hours as abdication of responsibility, lack of empathy and glaring incompetence in restoring peace and stability.
”This is shameful, to say the least. The death, killing and massacre in the middle belt is one too many. Perhaps the president needs reminding that the primary role of government is ensuring the safety and protection of lives and property.
”These killings are unacceptable and a reflection of the failure of leadership to live up to its most basic responsibility,” he concluded
The latest assault occurred on Friday when suspected herdsmen attacked Yelewata village, killing numerous residents. In response
