Spanish soccer giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have been put on alert by news that Bayern Munich has withdrawn its contract renewal offer to Joshua Kimmich according to well-informed Bild journalist Christian Falk, who cited anonymous sources on X - formerly known as Twitter.

Kimmich’s terms at the Allianz Arena expire on June 30, 2025. Like Alphonso Davies, whose contract runs down on the same date, the German international has been linked to both mentioned La Liga behemonths.

In the summer of 2023, then-Barca manager Xavi Hernandez wanted Kimmich to become the heir to Sergio Busquets, who had fled to join Lionel Messi at Inter Miami after captaining the club of his life to the domestic league title.

Barca was ultimately priced out of an approach for Kimmich, however, with similar logic applying to Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

Xavi instead had to settle for a low-cost Oriol Romeu, who failed to live up to expectations and demands under pressure in Montjuic despite being a La Masia graduate.

He has since returned to Girona, with Marc Casado stepping up from the academy and reserve outfit known as Barca Atletic to partner Pedri in what would be Kimmich’s usual role while Frenkie de Jong was out injured.

Over in the Spanish capital, Kimmich has been talked up as a potential replacement for retired compatriot Toni Kroos at the Bernabeu, and he could also allay shortages at right back - another position he is comfortable in - amid a reported approach for Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold who becomes a free agent as well on June 30.

While Davies seems more likely to commit his future to Bayern, it seems as though Kimmich could be on his way out if the Bavarians have withdrawn their renewal offer to the 30-year-old.

Though Barca doesn’t particularly need Kimmich given Casado’s rise and De Jong’s improved form, he could also do a job at right back where his former Bayern and Germany boss Hansi Flick needs reinforcements to give Jules Kounde a rest.

It now remains to be seen if either club that plays El Clasico makes a move to Kimmich, or if he might be pushed towards an outfit that can afford his high salary demands such as Manchester City.
