Published 2 days ago3 minute read

Balinese police suspect Australians are behind a double shooting that killed one man and left the former partner of slain underworld figure Carl Williams’ step-daughter with blunt-force trauma wounds and bullets embedded in his body.

Melbourne men Zivan Radmanovic, 32, and Sanar Ghanim, 34, and were both shot by what Balinese police say were two men on Saturday night. Radmanovic was shot in the head, chest and foot, and died at the scene.

Ghanim, the former partner of Carl Williams’ step-daughter Danielle Williams, was also shot and beaten when two men on motorcycles surprised them in a three-bedroom villa in Bali, where they had been holidaying for the past two months.

Radmanovic’s wife, Jazmyn Gourdeas, told police she heard glass breaking and gunshots, and the two attackers got on motorcycles. She said she heard one of them say “my bike won’t start” in an Australian accent before fleeing the scene, according to local police.

Senior Commissioner Ariasandy said although police could not yet officially confirm the identities of the culprits, “we suspect they are Australians, based on the wife’s testimony”.

“We believed the motives were not robbery as nothing was missing or taken. We suspect it’s a targeted attack. Based on the wounds of the dead victim, two shots to the left chest, they wanted him dead.”

Ariasandy said Ghanim might not have been the main target and was shot in the buttock.

“Until we can ask him questions, we cannot verify the situation yet. It’s an ongoing investigation,” he said.

“We are focused on his life-saving measures before we focus on the case. He is still being treated in the hospital, with suspected projectiles in his body.”

Arisandy said Indonesian police could not seek assistance from the Australian Federal Police until the confirmed the identities of the perpetrators.

The AFP has been contacted for comment.

Gun crime is rare in Indonesia, and police said they were investigating where the weapons had come from.

“We are still investigating. Is it an assembled gun, organic, or hybrid? We don’t know yet,” Ariasandy said. “Investigators are still investigating the projectiles, and there will be ballistics tests as well. We will then be able to conclude what kind of guns they were using.”

‘Assembled’ means crudely made local guns, ‘organic’ refers to guns assigned to police and army officers, and ‘hybrid’ means a modified gun.

Ghanim pleaded guilty to reckless conduct endangering life following a November 2014 incident, where he encouraged a friend to fire a sawn-off shotgun at a man on a public street following a dispute between the pair regarding a woman.

The man who was shot suffered 22 separate puncture wounds to his head, face, neck and abdomen, and some shotgun pellets were unable to be removed. Ghanim also pleaded guilty to growing 10 cannabis plants police found at his house in Lalor.

While on bail for that incident, Ghanim also scuffled with a Melbourne mechanic in October 2015 and fired a bullet that grazed the mechanic’s head. Ghanim pleaded guilty to reckless conduct endangering life, firearms charges and aggravated burglary over the incident.

He was sentenced to two years and 10 months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 17 months, for the shotgun incident and drugs.
