Baker's Gym - Matcha Strawberry Cake, Taro Coconut, and More at West Coast's Hidden Cake Cafe

Published 3 weeks ago3 minute read

This is not a gym to lose weight.

It is a cafe where you come to eat cake and forget about your calorie goals. At Baker’s Gym, the only lifting you do is with a fork.

I stumbled upon Baker’s Gym tucked away in NEWest mall on West Coast Drive.

A bit of background: Baker’s Gym runs hands‑on classes ranging from beginner to intermediate levels.

It has recently expanded with a cosy retail and café section.

Now you can actually sit down and enjoy your sliced cakes instead of hovering by the display like a lost gym-goer in the weights section.

It is not big, but it does the job for a quiet dessert or a quick catch up over sweets.

Here’s what you can expect: Fresh Taro Coconut ($9), Black and White with dark and white chocolate ($7.50), Madagascan Vanilla ($8), Lemon Pistachio ($8.50), Oreo Cream Cheese ($8), Matcha Strawberry ($8), and Strawberry Shortcake ($7.50).

There are also Rose Lychee ($7.50), Chocolate Earl Grey ($7.50), Chocolate Fudge ($7), Hojicha Milk Chocolate ($8.50), Chocolate Biscoff ($8), Banana Pudding Cake ($7.50), Red Velvet ($7.50), Mango Cake ($7.50), White Chocolate Caramel ($8), Lemon Strawberry ($8), and Basque Burnt Cheesecake ($7).

The cake selection is indeed wide and varied.

Since matcha with strawberry was trending, I had the Matcha Strawberry cake ($8) which presented itself with a tidy, attractive layering and a gentle matcha fragrance.

The sponge had a soft, airy texture and delivered a distinct green tea flavour.

It avoided bitterness, with the layer of strawberry filling adding a slight tartness that balanced the matcha.

Not done with my cake reps, I also had the signature Fresh Taro Coconut cake ($9) which stood out for its delicate pastel colour and natural aroma.

The sponge was moist and had a real taro flavour, subtle yet unmistakable.

The coconut cream brought a light nutty profile, and the overall sweetness was well controlled.

Singaporeans like their cakes “not too sweet”, and this one should fit the bill.

With the expansion, there is also a small drinks menu which covers all the essentials.

The highlight comes from their specialty matcha and hojicha drinks, with matcha sourced from Matchaya and hojicha from Niko Neko.

Some interesting ones I spotted were Matcha Strawberry Latte ($7.50), Dirty Matcha ($7.50), Matcha Banana Pudding Latte ($9.50), Matcha Earl Grey Latte ($7.50), Hojicha Latte ($5.50), Dirty Hojicha ($7), Biscoff Coffee Latte ($7), and Tiramisu Latte ($7).

Baker’s Gym is not a spot to lose weight, but it is a good place to gain baking skills (they run courses) or pick up a reliable cake.

It is a fun change from the usual café scene. You get a genuine, friendly experience and a taste of well-made, if slightly understated, bakes.
