At 37.1C, Capital Sees Its Warmest Day Of Year Yet

New Delhi: The city recorded the

hottest day of the year

on Tuesday as the maximum temperature rose to 37.1 degrees Celsius, six degrees above normal, at Safdarjung, the city's base weather station. It was 36 degrees a day earlier. The mercury is expected to stay between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
The India Meteorological Department has said that Pitampura was the hottest station at 38.9 degrees Celsius, followed by the Ridge in north Delhi at 38.7 degrees Celsius and Faridabad at 38.3. Ayanagar in south-west Delhi, Lodhi Road, Noida, and Gurgaon recorded 37.6, 37.2, 37.6 and 37.1 degrees, respectively.
"Due to clear skies, the sun's rays are penetrating the surface, leading to a rise in mercury. The day temperature is likely to rise further to around 38-40 degrees on Wednesday. However, as strong winds at the speed of 20-30kmph are likely to blow during the daytime from March 27 to 29, it may cause a slight dip in temperature," a Met official said. The official added that the maximum temperature may dip to around 34-36 degrees Celsius by March 28.
Before Tuesday, the highest temperature was 36.2 degrees Celsius on March 14. The highest maximum temperature recorded in March 2024 was 37.8 degrees Celsius on March 29. In March 2023, the city witnessed the highest maximum temperature at 34.3 degrees Celsius on March 16 and at 39.6 on March 31 in 2022.

The minimum temperature on Tuesday was 16 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. It was 15.2 degrees on Monday. "Similar to the days, the nights are likely to turn warmer. The minimum temperature is predicted to touch 18-20 degrees Celsius by March 27," a Met official said.
Delhi's air quality index stayed in the poor range for the second consecutive day. The AQI was 234 on Tuesday, compared to 203 a day earlier. The air quality is expected to remain poor on Wednesday, but it may improve to moderate on Thursday and Friday, the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the forecasting body under the Union ministry of earth sciences, said.
The Commission for Air Quality Management imposed stage I of GRAP on Monday in NCR.
