(IMD) issued a red alert on Tuesday evening for seven coastal and south interior districts of Karnataka. These include Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan. The IMD said these areas could experience very heavy rain, hailstorms, and strong surface winds overnight.
In Bengaluru, the rain continued through the day, but the city is still under an orange alert. Between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm on Tuesday, Bengaluru received 0.4 mm of rainfall. Weather experts say the situation in the city is improving, with thunderstorms moving quickly towards northwest Bengaluru.
The IMD has also warned of flash floods in all seven red-alert districts.
“Surface runoff or flooding may occur in low-lying areas and places with fully saturated soil due to the expected rain in the next 24 hours,” the IMD said in its warning.
Looking ahead, the IMD also said that the southwest monsoon is likely to begin over Kerala within the next four to five days, which could bring more rainfall to the region.
