Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin win Zurich Classic

Americans Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin secured their first PGA Tour victories at the Zurich Classic pairs event, held at TPC Louisiana. The duo carded a one-under par 71 in the final round's alternate shot format, culminating in a 72-hole score of 28-under 260. This performance edged out Danish twins Rasmus and Nicolai Hojgaard by a single stroke.

Novak and Griffin faced challenges after a weather delay, incurring back-to-back bogeys near the front nine's close. However, they regained composure on the back nine, highlighted by Griffin's pivotal 35-foot birdie putt on the par-three 17th hole. Despite pressure from the Danes, who birdied three of the last six holes, they parred the final hole to clinch the win.

Novak expressed gratitude towards Griffin for his guidance, especially after the weather interruption. Griffin, reflecting on the winning putt, mentioned his intent to position the ball favorably for Novak, but fortunately, it found the center. This win marked a significant turnaround for Novak, who had lost in a playoff at the Heritage tournament the previous week, mirroring Patrick Cantlay's 2022 feat.

Beginning with a bogey-birdie sequence, Novak and Griffin birdied the fifth and seventh holes before the weather suspension. Their lead, initially at three strokes, narrowed as they commenced the back nine. Defending champions Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry finished in a tie for 12th after a 72 closing round.

Karl Vilips, alongside American Michael Thorbjornsen, finished three shots behind the leaders after Vilips' tee shot landed in the water on the 17th. A subsequent double bogey diminished their chances, although they birdied the last. Cam Davis and Adam Svensson struggled, carding a 78.

Griffin and Novak, ranked 56th and 34th in the world, respectively, each earned $US1.329 million and 400 FedEx Cup points. Novak's strong season continued, positioning him sixth in the FedEx Cup standings.

The broadcast faced technical difficulties due to a power outage, affecting both CBS and Golf Channel's coverage. Play resumed, and Griffin's crucial putt secured their victory after Capan's tee shot on 17 went into the water. The Hojgaard twins finished second, while Capan and Knapp ended third.

Griffin and Novak are among the players to win their first tour titles since the Zurich Classic's shift to a two-man team format in 2017. Novak's win after a previous playoff loss echoes Cantlay's achievement in 2022. Lowry and McIlroy ended up T-12 after a final round of 72.
