ANA to buy 77 new aircraft, its largest single purchase
The operator of major Japanese airline, ANA, has announced that it will buy 77 new aircraft to prepare for expected growth in its international business.
According to the announcement on Tuesday, ANA Holdings will buy 77 new passenger aircraft over the five years from fiscal 2028.
The company plans to buy 30 aircraft from Boeing in the US, 27 from Airbus in Europe, and 20 from Embraer in Brazil.
The total price of the purchases has not been disclosed, but when calculated at a list price, it is about 14.5 billion dollars, which is the largest ever for a single order.
Many of Boeing's aircraft will be used in long-distance international routes, and are expected to strengthen its international business amid growing demand for air travel due to an increase in inbound tourism.
The Embraer aircraft will be introduced mainly on domestic routes instead of the Space Jet which was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as Japan's first domestically produced passenger jet. The locally made plane was withdrawn due to a lack of profit.
The aircraft to be ordered this time are all new models with high fuel efficiency, and the company aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Meanwhile, Japan Airlines announced in March last year that it will buy 42 new aircraft to expand its international business by 40 percent.
