Tension in the "Weekend Update" writers room? Really?

Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler reflected on their time co-anchoring Saturday Night Live's weekly news segment on the latter comedian's podcast Good Hang. During the episode, the Late Night host revealed the single point of tension between the costars during their shared tenure behind the news desk, which lasted from 2006 to 2008.

"I feel like the most tense our chemistry ever [was] was mornings — 'Update' mornings, bagel times," Meyers said. "Because someone had pre-split the jokes. And then there were a few leftover [jokes] that we both wanted. And I feel like there was a real dance."

Poehler was surprised to hear that she had expressed her desire to take the leftover jokes for herself. "Interesting," she said. "I thought I would have hidden that, but that's probably true. I think we were like, 'Are you going to take that joke? Hmm, I wonder who takes the good joke here.'"

Meyers explained his perspective. "Here's how I saw it from you: [You would say,] 'That feels like an Amy joke. Do you want it?'" he remembered. "And I'd be like, 'I mean, I would love it. It would mean a lot to me as a friend. I'm asking for it.' You're like, 'It's a real Amy joke.'"

The Parks and Recreation actress added that she would tell Meyers that the unassigned jokes "kind of flop" if he delivered them.

"Then I would go, 'I hex this joke.' I would hex it," she remembered. "I curse you and I curse this joke."

Meyers laughed, noting that Poehler would jokingly mime her "hexing" him off-screen while Meyers delivered any contested jokes.

He elaborated, "The few times you let me have it, you would be off camera while I was telling it, going" [holds up hands like a witch casting a spell].

Poehler said that she had no memory of genuine argumentation between the co-anchors. "I don't remember us ever fighting at all," she said.

Meyers insisted that this was the only sore subject between the two comedians. "That was it," he said. "It was just that."

The Baby Mama actress conceded that she remembers lighthearted disagreements with Meyers — and that their quarrels inspired their recurring "Weekend Update" segment "Really?", wherein the two anchors would incredulously react to frustrating news items.

"We did argue," Poehler said. "I don't think we ever got into it. But we like to — I mean, look, 'Really?' came out of that, right? We like to be frustrated and irritated, and I don't mind being frustrated and irritated with people that I'm close to."

Meyers agreed that playful contentiousness is a plus in his relationship with Poehler. "My favorite thing is when you and I feel very differently about a movie or a TV show — when we have different opinions about something" he said. "Because it's very fun when you're mad about something.”
