The tragic Thursday, May 22, incident occurred while the priest was reportedly on his way to conduct a church service, according to Elgeyo Marakwet county Police Commander Peter Mulinge.
Father Bett, known for his tireless efforts to champion peace along the troubled Kerio Valley corridor, is being mourned as a symbol of selfless service and unwavering faith.
His death has sent shockwaves through the community, where he was widely admired for his dedication to spiritual service, education, and reconciliation.
Marakwet West MP Timothy Toroitich eulogised the slain priest as a close friend and a beacon of hope.
“Father Bett was a man whose faith could move mountains. He always called to share encouragement and inspiration, especially in trying times,” said Toroitich.
Before his recent posting to the newly established Tot Parish, Father Bett served at Nerkwo Parish.
Beyond his pastoral duties, he played a critical advisory role in the development of key local schools, including Chebiemit Boys, Kapkoros Girls, Marakwet Boys, and Cheptulon Girls, contributing to their academic and moral growth.
Father Bett, who marked his second anniversary in the priesthood in November 2024, celebrated the milestone just months ago alongside a local family and their young son in Chepsirei, where they prayed, shared a cake, and rejoiced as one.

He always gave generously to the community, embodying servant leadership in both word and action.
This was witnessed during the anniversary and throughout his mission in the region.

Additionally, his commitment to service was evident in his willingness to minister in remote villages, where he often celebrated mass in humble settings without basic church facilities like tables or pulpits.

Referencing a famous quote by Thomas Jefferson, MP Toroitich expressed hope that Father Bett's death would not be in vain.
“The blood shed by Father Bett shall water the tree of peace in Kerio Valley,” he said, vowing that the priest’s legacy would live on as a catalyst for healing and unity in the region.

Now, grief has replaced joy, with residents calling on the government and security agencies to take swift, firm, and decisive action to restore peace and protect innocent lives in the region.
Meanwhile, six suspects have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of the priest.
General Service Unit (GSU) officers responded swiftly to the attack and immediately launched a manhunt as preliminary investigations have ruled out links to cattle rustling or banditry, suggesting the motive may lie elsewhere.
The National Police Service has condemned the killing and assured the public of a thorough and expedited investigation to bring all perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, residents have been urged to remain calm, continue with their daily routines, and fully cooperate with law enforcement as efforts to maintain peace intensify in the region.
