All Red Q&A- Ryan Gravenberch!

The 23-year-old Dutch international reflects on a stellar season for himself and Liverpool FC, how it has felt to switch to the no.6 role and what it’s like to play alongside Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones…

Yes, to be honest, my father was a really big Liverpool fan. So before, when I was like 12, 13, I always watched Liverpool with him. When I could come to Liverpool it was a really nice feeling and also he was really proud for me to come here. The fans and everyone, they are really amazing, so I was just happy that I could join this club.

Yes, I think that's the main difference, the intensity which we play with. Also, for example, we at Liverpool, we are really good on the counter, so you need the intensity and the engine that you can run that much.

It helped me settle, for sure. Last season the coach and the staff were not here, but Virgil and Cody were and they are just like two big brothers to me, so I'm really happy that they are here as well. Then the coach came in and, to be honest, I was happy because he just brings football into the team and that's what I stand for, what I really like. From the first minute he just had a big impact on the team with his principles of play, the style of play he wants to use, and just the belief that he brings into the team. For me, it's really good, and I think also for the other guys because he's very direct. I like that from a coach. He doesn't go around things. If it’s this, he’ll tell you it’s this and I like that. You can just talk with him about everything you want. He's a relaxed person.

I had a very good feeling. I had some goals that I set for myself and the coach put a lot of trust in me. I just wanted to show myself again to everyone and yeah, I'm really happy that I could do it. It's a bit different from my Ajax time when I played a little bit also in the six position, but not a lot. I knew a little about playing in that position, but I think this season it changed a lot for me, especially in the defensive part because I played as an eight and you don't have to defend that much. This season I think I made a lot of steps in the defending part. It was what was needed and that's also thanks to the coaches that I work with.

Mac Allister is a winner. He gives always everything and he's so smart, so smart on the ball and technically he's also really good. I'm really happy that I could play with him. For me, he's one of the best midfielders in the league. Curtis is also really technically good. When he has the ball it's difficult to take the ball because he keeps going, going and going, so he’s a really good player. Dom is the engine of the midfield. This guy can run so much and also in forward positions he can shoot really well. He has the freedom to be wherever he has to be and go in deep [behind opposition defences], so I'm really happy that I could also play with Dom.

Yeah, because Mo has the freedom, you know, to gamble a little bit forward so me and Dom are there to adapt to that and to give him that freedom. So that was a little different than last season for me as well, but we did it really well and yeah, it's going good.

On a personal level, I'm really happy with this season. Last season I didn't play as much. It was just step-by-step so I’m really happy that I was a big part of the success of this season. The Premier League award was a nice prize and I was really happy with it. I think nobody talked before the season that I was capable of doing this, so I’m happy that I could show myself again, and when we got the [Premier League] trophy at Anfield it was really amazing to have the moment with the fans. So yeah, to be honest I’m really happy with this season.
