Published 9 hours ago2 minute read

Divine Akinrogunde defeated Richy Osaware to come tops in the boys’ category of the Kehinde Cletus Idemudia Secondary Schools Chess Tournament organised by the Idemudia Ogunbor family in memory of the late Kehinde Cletus Idemudia, a legal practitioner.

Esther Sonyaolu defeated Victoria Oyakhilome to come first in the girls’ category.

The event, held at the premises of Swift Education Centre in Benin City, Edo State, had 39 students from five secondary schools in attendance.

Cash prizes of N40,000, N30,000, N20,000 and N10,000 were won by the four best students in the boys’ and girls’ categories, who played a total of five rounds with a time control of 20 minutes per player.

Two tie-break matches decided the winner for the boys’ category as well as the second and third places in the girls’ category.

The fourth positions had multiple winners, as with the custom in chess, the prize allocated for the fourth position was shared equally among the fourth-place winners.

Until his death in May 2013, Kehinde Idemudia was a retired permanent secretary in the Edo State Civil Service, as well as a devoted Christian of the Catholic faith.

His astute management of human and financial resources was rewarded with a “bead” by the late Oba Erediauwa, for the role he played in organising the activities of the 1979 coronation ceremony of the late Benin Monarch.
