NEW DELHI: In a landmark collaboration, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AI-CoE).

The MoU was signed by Prof. M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS Delhi, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, at a formal ceremony held at IIT Delhi. The AI-CoE will be the key execution body for a ₹330 crore grant awarded under the Ministry of Education’s flagship initiative — "Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India."

The new center will focus on developing AI-driven solutions to support national health programs, advance affordable healthcare, and improve service delivery, particularly for underserved communities.

Prof. Srinivas said the collaboration marks the start of transformative research that can “change the face of healthcare in the country.” Prof. Banerjee highlighted the center’s potential to “impact the lives of Indians through affordable and accessible AI-driven health solutions.”

Dr. Krithika Rangarajan (AIIMS) and Prof. Chetan Arora (IIT Delhi) will lead the AI-CoE as Chief Project Managers. They underscored the center’s mission to combine cutting-edge AI innovation with real-world healthcare needs — from upskilling medical staff to deploying AI in remote and marginalized regions.

Positioned as a national and international research hub, the AI-CoE aims to set a global benchmark for integrating indigenous AI technology with public health systems, redefining the future of healthcare innovation in India.
