AGF clears bank CEO of criminal charge

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has clarified its decision to discontinue the criminal charge against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc, citing her lack of direct involvement in the alleged fraudulent activities under investigation.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Special Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity, Office of the AGF, Kamarudeen Ogundele, explained that the decision to enter a nolle prosequi followed a comprehensive review of the case.

The review established that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe neither managed the implicated account nor held the position of MD/CEO at the time the account in question was opened.

“The Attorney General’s decision is a testament to the office’s commitment to upholding justice and fairness,” the statement read.

“As the chief law officer of the federation, the AGF has the constitutional authority to discontinue a prosecution when it is deemed necessary to prevent a miscarriage of justice.”

The statement clarified that the withdrawal of charges against Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe does not absolve Fidelity Bank as an institution from the allegations, which are still before the court.

“This is not to exculpate Fidelity Bank from the allegations contained in the charge, which remains pending before the court, but rather a demonstration of the Attorney General’s duty to ensure that justice is served,” Ogundele added.

The AGF’s office urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the judicial process to run its course, assuring that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law.

“The AGF will continue to ensure that the best interest of justice is served at all times, and that all those found wanting, at any time, face the full weight of the law to serve as a deterrent to others,” the statement said.
