at Sony. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the original, will write and direct. The first movie was based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Millionaires. This new film will be adapted from a series of articles by Jeff Horwitz for The Wall Street Journal entitled The Facebook Files, which were all published in October 2021. The Facebook Files explored the harms caused by the popular social media platform.

It is currently unknown if Jesse Eisenberg, who received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for playing Mark Zuckerberg in the original, will return for this sequel. Sorkin, Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser are set to produce the film.

The announcement comes after years of Sorkin speaking about his interest in working on a follow-up to The Social Network. Sorkin has also spoken at length about Facebook, stating how he blames the platform for the Capitol Riots on January 6th, 2021. “There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth, ” said Sorkin last year, when speaking about Facebook. “If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can’t buy for $119 billion, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by switching a one to a zero.”

Despite directing the first film, David Fincher will not return to direct, with Aaron Sorkin taking over the director’s chair. The film will be the acclaimed screenwriter’s fourth directorial feature, after Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being the Ricardos.
