Aamir Khan and his relationship with his nephew Imran Khan are well-known. Imran, though no longer working in film, remains popular with audiences and a legion of fans of his erstwhile work. Aamir Khan, in a recent interview, talked about their relationship, Imran’s debut, and why Imran receded from mainstream Hindi cinema.
Imran Khan, nephew of veteran Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, after a successful career in films, took a long hiatus from the industry. Now, he is set to make a comeback in films after a long break. However, an official confirmation or the film’s announcement is still awaited.
Imran Khan, once extremely popular, quit acting about 10 years ago. Speaking with Screen, Aamir said that Imran “finds it difficult to fit into the mainstream construct”. He further talked about how, despite the fact that Imran performed well in films such as Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly, he “won’t fit” in mainstream Hindi cinema.
Aamir said that while Imran wants to be an actor, he just is not “comfortable with herogiri”.
Further adding, “Yes, Imran has a certain creative instinct. He finds it difficult to fit into the mainstream construct we have. That’s not his natural space. Which is why he’d do really well in a film like Jaane Tu and Delhi Belly (2011). He’s in his element there. But the moment you put him into a regular Hindi film, he won’t fit. He’s not comfortable with herogiri. He wants to play a real person. Everybody was offering him mainstream films because he’s good-looking. But he wants to be an actor, and not a star.”
Imran, who made his debut playing childhood versions of his uncle’s character in films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, made his full-time debut in 2008 in the now cult classic Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. A film in which he shared the screen with actress Genelia D’Souza.
Genelia is incidentally playing the love interest of Aamir Khan in his upcoming, highly upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. The pairing has come under some criticism as well, considering the age gap between the leads.
According to reports, Imran is considering making an acting comeback, something anticipated by his fans for a long time now. He was reportedly in talks to star in a spy series with Disney+ Hotstar, but the project got canned.
