Call it a situationship, call it friends with benefits; whatever it is, newlyweds Mark () and Mary ) figure they’d try out ethical non-monogamy. A dog walker by day and a slacker by passion, Mark reconnected with bold singer Mary for the first time in years in a convenience store. With the appeal of an edgy sex comedy, the stage is set in . As the two attempt to give open relationships a try, the two reluctant grown-ups are about to make some complicated choices. Despite a storyline that tries too hard to be cool, the film’s appeal lies in its zany yet oddly relatable lead duo. Not everyone is as goofy or brazen as Mark and Mary, but audiences may relate to how the two cope with commitment issues and societal expectations of what a “proper” relationship should be.

is no stranger to creating otherworldly films, and is no exception. A surreal, vividly appetizing marriage between culinary and the arts, the film follows three experimental performance artists trying to push the boundaries of their creative expression. The trio is dedicated to an art form called “sonic catering”, or the process of extracting disturbing, goosebumps-churning ASMR by pulling out the sounds from various food items. Just from the premise alone, it’s a complete sensory overdrive. But the drama of the film lies in the people running this experiment. From the power-hungry Elle di Elle () to the mysterious director Jan Stevens (), the film is just as beautifully absurd as it is psychologically disturbing.

Slightly reminiscent of Ruby Ridge, follows a young girl experiencing a coming-of-age moment as her entire family descends into madness from living outside the grids of society. Set in a world of corrupt systems and questionable human beings, ultimately, it’s hard to truly run away from the remnants of where they initially came from. Whether it’s moving to a different city or going completely AWOL from the face of the Earth, these characters can never escape from the emotional baggage they must carry unless confronted. A slow burn of a plot, the movie’s momentum, and clichés result in polarizing opinions, but it is a movie that leaves audiences pondering nonetheless.
