The vessel manager of the Morning Midas, Zodiac Maritime, issued a statement to KTUU, stating that the ship was loaded with thousands of vehicles. Smoke was initially seen emanating from a deck carrying electric vehicles.

The Coast Guard said that the ship is believed to have about 350 metric tons of gas fuel on board, as well as 1,530 metric tons of “very low sulfur fuel oil.”

It’s also believed to be carrying over 3,000 vehicles, including 70 electric and 681 partial hybrid vehicles.

The crew immediately initiated emergency firefighting procedures using the vessel’s onboard fire suppression systems. However, despite their efforts, the situation could not be brought under control,” the Zodiac Maritime statement read.

The crew on board was evacuated via lifeboat and were transferred to a nearby merchant vessel, according to Zodiac Maritime.

In their latest update, USCG states that a Cutter and aircrews were sent to the ship.
