17 businesses displaced after SUV crashes into Brightwaters office building, officials say
Seventeen businesses in a Brightwaters building were displaced after an SUV crashed into the structure and caused significant damage, including the collapse of the first floor into the basement, authorities said.
No one was in the Palacios Professional Building, which was closed for the weekend, at the time of the crash late Sunday afternoon, Bay Shore Fire Department Chief John Ippolito Jr. said.
The driver of the SUV was treated by paramedics at the scene and issued a ticket for speeding, the Suffolk County Police Department said Monday.
Ippolito said the Bay Shore Fire Department responded at 5:53 p.m. Sunday to a report that a vehicle had crashed through the front part of the building, located at 160 Howells Rd.
The crash left its 17 tenants displaced and the building's owner, Laura Palacios, 48, of Huntington, said because of their role in the community, "it’s super important to get them back to work."
For the tenants, Palacios said, "this is their bread and butter, their hair salons, their law firms."
Officials are trying to determine the extent of the damage to the building, where dozens were employed. The first floor collapsed into the basement, according to Ippolito. The fire department shored up the building before turning over the scene to local fire marshals and Suffolk police.

"We’re working with the building department and fire marshals to get the building up and running again as soon as possible," Palacios said.
"I’m stressed. It’s very upsetting, I’m more worried about the tenants," she added. "If, God forbid, there was someone in the building, who knows? It’s horrible."
Police notified the Town of Islip building inspector. The town's building department did not respond immediately to a request for comment Monday.
