The later novels of the Harry Potter series The Order of the Phoenix was a secret society founded by Albus Dumbledore, whose main goal was to fight the rise of the Dark Lord and his terror over the Wizarding World.

The order was founded during the First Wizarding War, which ended with the supposed demise of Lord Voldemort in 1981. However, the First War saw a lot of deaths, with most of the original Order wiped out before the end of the war, including Harry’s parents, James Potter and Lily Evans. joining after he completed his studies at Hogwarts. Sirius managed to survive the First War, but was framed for the murder of James and Lily, leading to him being sentenced to Azkaban prison for 12 years.

Severus Snape is a very complex character in terms of his association to the Order of the Phoenix. When Snape hears the prophecy and relays the information to Voldemort, he is shocked to learn that his master has marked Lily Evans for death, leading to Snape pledging his allegiance to Dumbledore to protect the woman he loved.
