The later novels of the Harry Potter series The Order of the Phoenix was a secret society founded by Albus Dumbledore, whose main goal was to fight the rise of the Dark Lord and his terror over the Wizarding World.

The order was founded during the First Wizarding War, which ended with the supposed demise of Lord Voldemort in 1981. However, the First War saw a lot of deaths, with most of the original Order wiped out before the end of the war, including Harry’s parents, James Potter and Lily Evans. When Voldemort returned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Order was reformed,

joining after he completed his studies at Hogwarts. Sirius managed to survive the First War, but was framed for the murder of James and Lily, leading to him being sentenced to Azkaban prison for 12 years.

By the start of the Second Wizarding War, Sirius had escaped from Azkaban and had been living on the run for almost two years, joining the Order once again and providing his childhood home to the Order as headquarters. shot a spell at him that caused him to fall into the mysterious Veil.

Many Harry Potter fans may not be familiar with Emmeline Vance, as she was not a major character. However, when some of the Order members arrive to escort Harry from Privet Drive to Grimmauld Place, Emmeline is introduced. While the novels do not clarify if Emmeline was part of the order during the First War,

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince revealed that which made her death newsworthy of even Muggle newspapers. It was also revealed that Severus Snape provided the information to the Death Eaters that led to Emmeline’s death.

It’s no secret that Albus Dumbledore played a crucial role in both Wizarding Wars, being the founder of the Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore managed to survive the First Wizarding War, By the events of Half-Blood Prince, the world finally realized that Voldemort had returned, leading to many deaths and disappearances throughout the country.

Despite the terror, Hogwarts was always considered a safe place, especially with Dumbledore in charge. Unfortunately, Dumbledore is killed after Draco Malfoy manages to sneak the Death Eaters into Hogwarts, It was then revealed in Deathly Hallows that this was upon Dumbledore’s request, in order to maintain Snape’s identity as a double agent.

When Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody was introduced as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Goblet of Fire, it was made clear that he was an old friend of Dumbledore, When Voldemort returned, Moody returned to the group, often taking up a leadership position when Dumbledore was absent.

Moody managed to survive the first two years of the war, but Deathly Hallows saw the character dying in the early chapters. When the Order escorts Harry to the Burrow from Privet Drive, not everyone manages to make it back, Moody’s body was never found by the Order, with only his magical eye being recovered by Harry when he finds it at the Ministry of Magic.

Harry Potter fans who haven’t read the books may not be familiar with Ted Tonks, who was the father of Nymphadora Tonks and husband of Andromeda Black, the sister of Bellatrix Lestrange. While Ted was not an official Order member,

After the Death Eaters take over the Ministry, and declare war on muggle-born wizards, Ted goes on the run, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione encountering him in the woods with Dean Thomas, Dirk Cresswell, and a pair of goblins.

While Peter Pettigrew was a Voldemort supporter during the Second Wizarding War, joining after completing his studies at Hogwarts alongside his friends, James, Sirius, and Remus Lupin. However, Pettigrew ends up betraying his friends, giving Voldemort the Potter’s location, leading to their deaths.

Pettigrew went into hiding after framing Sirius, helping Voldemort return to his full body. Pettigrew ends up dying during Deathly Hallows, after getting into a fight with Harry. When Harry reminds Pettigrew of how he saved his life in Prisoner of Azkaban, Pettigrew hesitates,

Fred Weasley, along with his brother George, were certainly not part of the original Order, being born in 1978, three years before the end of the First Wizarding War. When the Order is reformed, Molly Weasley refuses to allow the twins to join, but by Deathly Hallows,

Fred and George arrive alongside the rest of the Order for the Battle of Hogwarts, leading to Fred’s death. right after making a lighthearted joke with his brother, Percy. This was an incredibly heartbreaking death for readers, as Fred was a beloved character, and was only 20 years old at the time of his death.

Remus Lupin is introduced in Prisoner of Azkaban, with Order of the Phoenix When Voldemort returns, Remus rejoins the Order, serving as a recruiter for the werewolves under Dumbledore's orders, and spending some time with them during Half-Blood Prince.

Remus arrives to the Battle of Hogwarts with the rest of the remaining Order members, with Harry finding Lupin’s body in the Great Hall in the aftermath of the battle. Remus is actually the last Marauder to die, being the sole survivor after Pettigrew’s death a few months previously.

Nymphadora Tonks is introduced in Order of the Phoenix as an Auror working under Alastor Moody, Tonks was too young to have been a part of the original Order, being born in 1973, and being only eight years old when Voldemort supposedly died and the war ended.

Tonks takes part in many battles during the second war, but her demise ultimately comes during the Battle of Hogwarts. Harry finds Tonks’ body alongside her husband, Lupin, leaving their newborn son, Teddy Lupin, orphaned.

Severus Snape is a very complex character in terms of his association to the Order of the Phoenix. When Snape hears the prophecy and relays the information to Voldemort, he is shocked to learn that his master has marked Lily Evans for death, leading to Snape pledging his allegiance to Dumbledore to protect the woman he loved.

When Lord Voldemort sets his sights on mastery of the Elder Wand, he kills Snape by having his pet snake, Nagini, bite him through the neck, believing that Snape was the Elder Wand's true master as he was the one who killed Albus Dumbledore.
